How to Stay Safe During Summer

The weather is getting warmer and soon the hot days of summer will be here. Let’s hope we don’t have too many heat waves this year. Every year, hundreds of people die because of heat-related illnesses. Older people are more prone to the effects of heat but young people are not immune to this and should still be careful. To prepare for those hot days, here are some tips on how to stay safe during summer:
1. Make sure to hydrate enough. Drink plenty of water. Avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages as they dehydrate you more.
2. Wear light weight, loose-fitting, light colored clothes. Dark colors absorb more heat.
3. Reduce strenuous activities during this time. If you have to exercise or perform strenuous activities, do them during cooler parts of the day.
4. Stay in an air-conditioned environment. This can be your home or a public place such as shopping mall, movie theater, library or a cooling center nearby.
5. Use fans to draw cool air into your home at night and circulate indoor air during the day.

Sometimes staying indoors is not an option. When you have to be outside, observe the following tips:
1. Stay in the shade, especially during midday hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). This is when UV rays are strongest and do the most damage.
2. Protect your exposed skin with clothing. A long-sleeved shirt and long pants with a tight weave are best. As mentioned above, light-colored clothes are better.
3. Wear a hat with a wide brim to shade the face, head, ears, and neck.
4. Wear shades that blocks as close to 100% of both UVA and UVB rays as possible.
5. Wear on sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, and both UVA and UVB protection.
