Do you like sleeping on your stomach? If you do, read on. I decided to share this because a lot of patients tell me they like to sleep on their stomach. This is not the sleeping position I recommend because it is generally not good for the neck and the low back. But if this is the only position you can comfortably sleep in, then I want you to be able to do that and be safe.
In this case we will need a couple pillows. Two are regular pillows and another one is a prone pillow or face pillow. So if you’re going to go on your stomach, have one pillow right under your stomach. Then have another pillow under your ankles. The prone pillow or face pillow will be the cradle for your face.
This is how I would recommend you to sleep on your stomach. You have one pillow under your tummy and then the other pillow here under the lower leg or ankle area. And then you have one pillow to cradle your face so your neck is straight. Some people like to sleep with the neck to the side. My problem with that one is if you’re doing that for 4 or 5, 6, 7 hours you might end up with a stiff neck.
In the position that I showed, your head will be straight and your neck will be straight. So if you are going to sleep on your stomach and you really cannot sleep on your back, which is still the best position if you have back pain, you can do this.
